MathPath 2023: Unforgettable connections and adventures

As we approach the final week of MathPath, it is heartwarming to witness the strong connections that have developed among our students. They have not only developed a fondness for one another but also formed a genuine support system both inside and outside the classroom. The growth of these relationships has undoubtedly enhanced the MathPath experience, and we look forward to the remaining days filled with continued fun and camaraderie.

During the breakout sessions last week, our students were exposed to a diverse array of mathematical topics. Dr. H provided instruction on Mathematica, with no prior programming experience required. Every day, students accessed the Wolfram Cloud, utilizing this powerful software to solve equations and generate graphics of functions. Through the lens of Number Theory, MathPathers explored various classic ciphers in an always popular breakout, "Cryptology." Under the guidance of Prof R, students gained a solid foundation that may one day pave their path to becoming expert codebreakers. Dr. Vega taught “Knot Theory,” another MathPath classic. She had the students take a hands-on approach, joining hands to wrap themselves in particular knots before attempting to untangle.

We enjoyed a series of plenaries from Paul Zeitz this week. Dr. Z talked about a wide range of topics, including geometry puzzles, p-adic numbers and quantum computing. Dr. Z told stories to MathPathers about his own youth, sharing his experience as a kid with an intense interest in mathematics. Dr. Vega ran another full-camp DEI activity on Thursday, where students explored “dimensions of culture,” including things like events, behaviors, foods, and beliefs. Many MathPathers shared a dimension of their own culture, before turning their focus on the culture of MathPath itself.

On Sunday, we drove to the coast to enjoy Cannon Beach and its beautiful natural surroundings. A bus of students started the day in Ecola State Park, hiking among the spruce trees over breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. After reconvening for lunch in town, we split into smaller groups to explore the charming local shops and seek glimpses of the elusive Tufted Puffins along the shoreline. MathPathers bought souvenirs and boba tea, dipped their toes in the water and enjoyed a day in the sun on the stunning shoreline of the Pacific Northwest.

On Monday, MathPathers embarked on a day filled with excitement and diverse activities. Some enjoyed the natural beauty of the Columbia River Gorge as they hiked the challenging "Angel's Rest," while others put their problem-solving skills to the test in local escape rooms. A group of book enthusiasts immersed themselves in the vast collection of Powell's bookstore, while others went to “Superplay,” an arcade, bowling alley and laser tag location that kept us entertained for hours. Those with an interest in science had the opportunity to tour a nuclear reactor at nearby Reed College, asking questions to the undergraduate students conducting research there. The day concluded with a movie, providing a moment of relaxation and entertainment for all.

As we enter the final week of MathPath 2023, we are filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. This concluding stretch promises to be a memorable one, as we aim to make these remaining days truly extraordinary.
