MathPath 2023 Comes to an End

As MathPath draws to a close, we reflect on an unforgettable journey of intellectual growth, camaraderie, and cherished memories. Throughout this summer, we witnessed the immense potential of each student, their passion for learning, and their unwavering support for one another. From inspiring breakout sessions to enlightening plenaries, every moment has been filled with enthusiasm and a thirst for knowledge. We will miss the MathPath community, but as Prof D said during our closing ceremony, “in a sense MathPath 2023 will never end because it now lives inside of each one of us.”

Our last week here in Portland was undeniably fantastic. The students enthusiastically participated in their final breakouts, eager to absorb every remaining bit of knowledge. “Metric Spaces” taught by counselor E was a hit, and students spent the final days ranking their favorite metrics from the course. Dr Kent worked with students to understand the intriguing world of “Hyperbolic Geometry.” Dr Z talked complex numbers with students in “Roots of Unity,” and held activities where students built geometric objects with Zometool kits. Dr.V finished up his week of fascinating plenaries, and Prof Pudwell proposed the final Problem of the Day.

Isaac and JJ organized the first-ever MathPath 5K Fun Run. Students and faculty walked and ran a marked course on campus, some racing for the finish line and others enjoying the day and chatting with friends. We celebrated the success of the program on Saturday night with the MathPath Closing Ceremonies, where staff, faculty, counselors and students were all recognized for their contributions to our community. We ended the night with the annual MathPath Variety Show, where students displayed their passions, talents and creativity on stage in front of an audience of parents and families. Some played instruments, others sang and danced, and a few performed humorous skits and comedy acts.

Students spent the rest of Saturday night together, hanging out in the dorms and signing each other’s yearbooks. We shared tearful goodbyes as students left campus Sunday morning, all of us grateful for the time we spent together this summer. We will carry with us the knowledge, friendships, and unforgettable experiences we shared at MathPath, knowing that this is not the end but the beginning of a lifelong love for learning and a cherished community that will always remain in our hearts.
